LAYOFF HELPLINE
The Union Plus Credit Card and Loan programs offer a layoff helpline to assist union members who have difficulties making payments on their Union Plus accounts due to temporary or permanent layoffs (available to credit card and loan program participants only).

Union Plus Credit Card Layoff Helpline: 1-800-551-2873

Union Plus Loan Program Layoff Helpline: 1-800-365-1328

Members can speak with a bank specialist who will evaluate their situation and determine the best solution to help them through this difficult time. The specialist will determine what assistance the member qualifies for based upon account history, payment history and credit record. The following help may be available:
  • Skip payment options
  • Interest rate reductions
  • Short and long-term hardship programs
  • Account settlements
  • Credit counseling
We handle our members with care.

When union members are faced with special circumstances, we are here to help. Once we verify your special situation, we're committed to providing the assistance you need.

If you currently participate in a Union Plus program and are laid off or on a prolonged strike, you're eligible for special benefits. Read about the unique ways we assist union members:

Union Plus Credit Card

For workers on strike:

  • Strike skip-payment plan available to members of most unions during union-sanctioned strikes or lockouts of 30 consecutive days or more, as long as the account is in good standing. (Finance charges continue to accrue, but no penalty fees apply.) You can skip up to three consecutive months in a row, and a total of four months in a year.
  • To access the benefit: Call 1-800-622-2580 to discuss your situation with a customer care representative. Members must make a payment after the third consecutive strike skip month and then they can access the fourth skip month. During each skip-payment month, you must notify the bank that the strike is going on and that you intend to exercise the strike skip-payment option.

For laid off workers:

  • Skip up to two monthly payments a year, as long as the account is in good standing. (Finance charges continue to accrue, but no penalty fees apply.)
  • To access the benefit: Call 1-800-622-2580 during each month you want to skip a payment. You must notify the bank you want to skip a payment, unless it is offered to you on your statement.

Union Plus Mortgage and Real Estate

You become eligible for special Mortgage Assistance Program benefits after you have had your Union Plus mortgage for one year.

For workers on strike:

  • Strike benefits are protection available if you are involved in a prolonged union-sanctioned strike or lockout lasting 90 days or longer (provided you have had your mortgage through Union Plus Mortgage & Real Estate for more than one year).
  • For 3 months - beginning with your first payment after the 90th day - one half your monthly mortgage payment of principal and interest will be paid. For the next 3 months - Your entire principal and interest payment will be paid. Payments that are made for you will not have to be made up or repaid at a later time.
  • This is a one-time benefit for one strike or lockout during the life or your mortgage payment.
  • To access the benefit: Call Union Plus Mortgage at 1-800-848-6466 to speak with a mortgage counselor at least two weeks prior to the 90th day of the strike. A strike verification form will be mailed to you, along with specific instructions that must be followed to gain access to the benefits. Complete the strike verification form and have it signed by a union representative. Return the fully executed form, along with your portion of the mortgage payment and your mortgage loan coupon/statement, in the postage paid envelope that will be provided. Once the benefit goes into effect, beginning with the fourth month of the strike or lockout, one half of the principal and interest is covered on your mortgage loan for up to 3 months. (You are responsible for paying the taxes and insurance portion of your monthly mortgage payment for each month that you receive benefits.) If you are still on strike or locked out at the end of the first 3-month payment period, your entire principal and interest payment will be waived for another 90 days. You must notify the mortgage counselor immediately when you go back to work. This is a 1-time-only benefit.
  • NOTE: If you are on strike or locked out for less than 90 days, chances are you may still face financial strain. If so, call 1-800-472-2005 to see if alternate assistance is available.

For laid off workers:

  • You can apply for an interest-free loan from the Union Plus Mortgage Assistance Fund to cover your monthly payment. Loans are made on the basis of need and cover up to 3 months mortgage payments. Depending upon your circumstances, you may qualify for a total of up to 6 monthly payments. Loans are interest-free and monthly payments begin 4 months after your last assistance fund payment.
  • To access the benefit: Call Union Plus Mortgage & Real Estate at 1-800-848-6466 as soon as you know that you will be unable to make your monthly payment. A mortgage assistance fund application will be mailed to you. To apply for a loan, complete the application and return it. You will be contacted to discuss your circumstances and request additional information, if needed. Decisions are normally made within a week after complete information is obtained. Repayment begins 4 months after you receive your last assistant payment.
